The New First Dog!
The Obama's are being presented with a super cute Portugese Water Dog puppy, who they are naming Bo today. A present from Senator Ted Kennedy, Bo is 6 months old and was in need of re-homing. What is re-homing, you ask? Re-homing is when a dog is purchased from a REPUTABLE breeder and turns out to not be a good fit for a family. The breeder than takes the puppy back and finds it a more suitable home. Though not a rescue, the Obama's are making a "sizeable" donation to help rescued pups everywhere.
Not everyone is thrilled that the Obama's chose to not get a rescue. Best Friends Animal Society, a sanctuary for animals, has done a great job of voicing their concerns in their recent blog post.

Oprah adopts from PAWS!!
We were so excited to hear that Oprah, a fervent anti-Puppy Mill advocate and everyone's favorite TV show host, adopted a rescue Cocker Spaniel from Chicago shelter PAWS!
Last year Oprah lost her beloved Cocker Sophie (right) to kidney failure at age 13. According to reports, last weekend she and Stedman went to PAWS for a tour and were enamored by a litter of Cocker Spaniel puppies. The name of the puppy is going to be revealed on Oprah's show tomorrow. So exciting!
Congratulations on the new addition, Oprah!
Here is some more information on PAWS: PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving) is the city's largest No Kill humane organization, focused on alleviating Chicago's tragic pet homelessness problem. Since PAWS Chicago's founding, the number of homeless pets killed in the city has been reduced by more than half ―from 42,561 pets killed in 1997 to 18,969 in 2007. PAWS Chicago envisions a No Kill Chicago and that dream is within reach because of important lifesaving work that is being done every single day.
PAWS not only handles adoptions, but they also have a low cost Spay/Neuter program, low cost veterinary care & pet food pantry for those in need and they're helping to pass the anti-Puppy Mill law in Illinois! They're a great organization that's helping make the lives of dogs in Chicago better.

Sabrina & Ollie, Service Dogs Extraordinaire!
My friend Veronica sent me some great photos of her two dogs playing with our wool eel toys and Simply Fido Organic Toys!! Ollie (left) is a 11 month old Standard Poodle. When Ollie isn't chomping on wool toys or playing with his sister Sabrina, an 8 year old Pittie/ Weim mix, he's Veronica's SDIT (Service Dog in Training).
Ollie is taking over for Sabrina after many years of service. Here is the lovely Sabrina in her bling collar from us!
What is a Service Dog? A Service Dog is a dog that is trained to help a handler with a LIFE LIMITING DISABILITY and the dog must be trained to help mitigate that disability. In Ollie's case, he's trained to alert Veronica to panic attacks, then to lean onto her and help ground her throughout the attack. I hear a lot of people who want to pretend that their dog is a Service Dog just so they can take it on a plane for free (or because it's too large to fit underneath a seat) or be able to take it "everywhere." Not only is it WRONG, but in most states, faking a Service Dog is illegal and can result in hefty fines and even time in jail! Service Dogs, which include Psychiatric Service Dogs (like Ollie), Guide Dogs (for people with sight impairments), Mobility Assistance Dogs (for people with mobility and balance problems) have to be trained to help with their handler's disability and have to be trained to behave in public. For more information on Service Dogs, visit www.psychdog.org or www.deltasociety.org
Here, Sabrina goes for a ride in her bike trailer, available by special order! Simply Fido Organic Toys are tough enough to take a tugging from two large dogs!!

Why No Rawhide or Greenies?
We get asked every day why we don't carry rawhide. Here is a simple list of reasons we do not:
-Most rawhide is made in China. We don't carry ANY treats made in China. Even the rawhide made in the USA are dangerous.
-To get the flesh off of the hide, most manufacturers use either an Ash/Lye or Lime solution. They are VERY caustic and dangerous solutions. To get the Ash/Lye or Lime off of the product and to sanitize it, manufacturers use a BLEACH solution. At this time they also shape the rawhide. -During this process, rawhide shrinks. When your dog chews off a piece, it will swell in it's stomach. The gastric juices in a dogs' stomach will not break it down. If the piece is too large, it will get caught in the bowels and need costly surgery to be removed.
What about Greenies? Despite their healthy appearance, Greenies are not a healthy or safe dog or cat treat. It's widely known that Greenies, made of mostly unnatural ingredients, have caused the deaths of hundreds of dogs. Being undigestible, Greenies have a tendency to get caught in the throat or in the bowels of dogs, causing anything from mild coughing to needing emergency surgery to death. Click Here to read stories about some of the dogs that were injured by Greenies.
Sure, they've been reforumulated. But let's compare the new ingredients to the Terrabone, one of the dental chews we carry:
Greenies Ingredients: Gelatin, Wheat Protein Isolate, Glycerin, Soy Protein Isolate, Sodium Caseinate, Natural Poultry Flavor, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Vegetable Oil (Preserved with Propyl Gallate), Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Lecithin, Ground Flaxseed, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Monostearate, Monoglycerides of Edible Fatty Acids, Choline Chloride, Potassium Sorbate (A Preservative), Minerals (Magnesium Oxide, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Maganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Vitamins (dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [source of Vitamin E], Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Folic Acid), Chlorophyll.
Terrabone Ingredients:
Organic Brown Rice PowderUSDA certified organic. Low in saturated Fat, and very low in cholesterol and sodium. It is also a very good source of manganese - an essential trace nutrient., Tapioca StarchGround up tapioca, which comes from a yucca plant. Tapioca starch is gluten-free, and is often added to gluten-free baking., Waterthe healthiest substance on earth., Vegetable Glycerinnatural ingredient, Natural Chicken Flavorhormone free , antibiotic free purified chicken liver., Organic Pea PowderUSDA certified organic. Very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Protein, Vitamin A, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Thiamin and Manganese., CarrageenanPurified extract made from red seeweed. Calcium Carbonatecalcium supplement that helps clean teeth., Tricalcium Phosphatenatural mineral that helps clean teeth., Lecithinan antioxidant that occurs naturally from soybeans., Brewers Dried Yeastcontains lots of B vitamins and tastes yummy., Parsley Powder100% natural & freshens breath., Peppermint oil100% natural & freshen breath. , Citric acidsource of Vitamin C., Rosemary oilnatural preservative. Rosemary is extremely high in iron, calcium and vitamin B6., Vitamin Eantioxidant and natural preservative..
First, let's notice that Greenies have a LOT more ingredients than Terrabones. I don't know what most of the ingredients are- Monoglycerides of Edible Fatty Acids? Wheat Protein Isolate? Sodium Tripolyphospate? Nope. I have no idea. I do know what Organic Brown Rice Powder, Tapioca Starch and Peppermint oil are, though! How many natural ingredients do you see in Greenies? I cound one. Chlorophyll. How many do we see in Terrabones? All of them. All of the ingredients, including tricalcium phosphate (a mineral which helps clean teeth) are natural.
What other chews are safe?
-Tendon treats including Bully Sticks, Flossies and Wish Bones are made of beef tendon and not only help clean teeth, but are 100% digestible.
-Terrabones and Z-Ridge bones are a safe and healthy alternative to Greenies, but have the same bone shaped appearance.
-Raw meaty bones. Cooked bones can splinter, but raw meaty bones have huge dental benefits. They're also great if you need to keep your dog occupied for a while! Throw 'em a Primal Beef marrow bone and they'll be happily munching on it and quiet.
-Sweet Potato treats! Dogs go NUTTY for sweet potatoes! Low glycemic, they're great for dogs with diabetes or weight issues. They're also full of fiber and great for sensitive stomachs. We'll be getting in new exciting sweet potato treats to add to our current selection soon!

Pet Dental Health Month!
February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Keeping Fido or Fifi's chompers sparkly clean not only helps keep icky breath at bay, but can help them avoid serious illness in the future. Poor dental health can lead to heart disease, organ failure and even death.
According to the AVMA, some signs to look out for are:
-Bad breath, especially rotten smelling
-Tartar build up. Just like us, dogs and cats should have sparkly, tartar free teeth.
-Swollen, receding or bloody gums
-Fractured teeth. Pets can get painful cavities, just like people can.
-Change in eating habits including chewing out of one side of the mouth and not eating.
What can we do to keep dental disease at bay?
-Keep appropriate chews on hand. We'll talk more about this later.
-Start a dental hygiene routine. Come in for some PetzLife gel or yummy flavored toothpaste and start brushing your pet's teeth often.
-Have yearly dental exams done. I make sure every time I take one of my pets in to have Dr. Wake or Dr. Baley do a quick tooth check, just to make sure everything looks a-OK.

Puppy Bowl!
Despite being a Steelers fan, one of the highlights for me of last night's Super Bowl was Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl. This year's event, including the Kitty Half Time Show, highlighted adoptable dogs and cats from Petfinder.com. The puppies, both mixed breed and pure bred, are SO CUTE! My favorite part is the "Bowl Cam" where you can watch the puppies and kittens drinking. Most of the time they end up splashing their paws or ears in the water. Props to Animal Planet for promoting adoption!

Weruva
Since cats can be so picky, we're always searching for cat foods that will appease the most discerning palate. Weruva is proving to be just that! Made in a human food facility, Weruva is actually approved for human consumption! It looks good enough to eat, too!! Weruva is made with select cuts of antibiotic free, hormone free, free range chicken and beef. They hand place ingredients such as fresh vegetables, and many of their toppers which are unique proteins such as grilled skipjack, grilled tilapia, grilled red bigeye, calamari and shirasu. What does this mean? You can actually RECOGNIZE what's in your cat's food!
Do you have a Hungry Dog?
At this weekend's Pet Food Summit we were lucky to get samples of Cloud Star's Muttos & Provenance treats for the Poms to try. Bebe and Jack went WILD for the Muttos and Parker LOVED the Provenance! Muttos are kinda like the dog version of Combos but much healthier. They're two treats- and two flavors combined into one. We have both the Duck & Sweet Potato and Peanut Butter & Green Apple. They smell soo yummy that I'm tempted to try them! I've done it before!
Provenance is Cloud Star's Grain Free treat. Parker is allergic to grains and was excited to try the Provenance treats. They come in Cheese & Potato, Chicken & Potato and White Fish & Potato, all great for dogs with sensitive tummies.
Another product we were excited to see at the Pet Food Summit was the Merrick Hungry Dog Super Value Pack. It's a 2lb assortment of Merrick treats- including Flossies, Miss Porky Ears, and Texas Toothpicks- that did not quite recieve the Merrick 5 star brand. They're still great quality treats, just some are too small or too large. We just opened up a bag for the Poms to find TONS of flossies- one of their favorites!
Ziwi Peak!
We were super busy the past few days getting ready for all of the new products we have in! Ziwi Peak dog & cat food is as close to a biologically appropriate food you can get without going raw. It's grain, corn, wheat, soy, preservative, color, chemical and sugar free! What's in it, then? Meat! Ziwi Peak closely matches the diet dogs & cats would eat in the wild. What are the advantages? It's easy to digest, it helps control weight issues, will reduce stool volume & gas and much more! It also contains Green Lipped Mussels, which helps promote healthy joints. Because it's such a concentrated food you have to feed very, very little. Parker is going ga-ga for the Lamb formula and Rosalie, store kitty, loves the Venison cat formula with Fish and Venison canned Ziwi Peak on top!
Canned Ziwi Peak, just like the dry food, is high in meat. It's great to help hide pills (like Bebe's thyroid medicine!), stuff in a kong, as a dry food topper or as a stand alone diet.
Ziwi Peak treats are GREAT for training! Since they're so high in meat dogs really want to work for them! Cats, being obligate carnivores, also go crazy for Ziwi Peak.

Another Recall
From the Sun-Times:
Salmonella scare prompts Jewel to recall dog biscuits
January 24, 2009
FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
Jewel Food stores announced Saturday that due to the recent Salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter products, the store has recalled Happy Tails dog biscuits.
Although no pet illnesses have been linked to the biscuits, the grocery store has recalled the product as a precautionary measure, according to a release.
The Happy Tails multi-flavored biscuits may contain peanut butter, which has “the potential to be contaminated with salmonella,” the release said.
The Peanut Corporation of America voluntarily recalled all peanut butter and peanut paste products produced in its Blakely, Georgia processing facility following multiple reports of salmonella-related illnesses linked to the products, the release said.
Signs that your pet may have ingested Salmonella are diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting, the release said. Some pets experience decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Well animals can carry the illness and pass it on to humans or other animals.
Although salmonella bacterial infection is most commonly associated with raw meat, eggs and produce, it can also grow in uncooked processed foods.
Salmonella bacteria live in the intestinal tracts of many animals and are generally transmitted through contact with feces from an infected source. Typhimurium is the most common of nearly 2,500 strains of salmonella bacteria.
Customers who purchased the biscuits can bring the product back to their local Jewel-Osco store for a full refund or exchange, the release said.
None of the treats we carry have been recalled. We have been in touch with our manufacturers and they are safe.

Opt to Adopt! Jack-Jack and Bebe Belle's story.
Puppy mills are a subject close to our heart at Parker's Pets as both Bebe Belle and Jack-Jack are puppy mill rescues. Now that spring is coming and puppy buying season is coming, let's all OPT TO ADOPT. What are puppy mills? Puppy mills are commercial breeding facilities where dogs are bred for profit. Generally, dogs are kept in cages their whole lives, never given human attention or veterinary care. Their whole lives are to breed puppies, who are then sold to pet stores. No matter what a pet store says, no reputable breeder sells their puppies to pet stores! Reputable breeders, who breed for the love of the breed and to better the breed, care where their puppies go.
Jack-Jack was rescued from a puppy mill in central Indiana when the miller decided to retire. A known puppy miller, he placed an ad in the local paper to try to sell his breeding stock. The local pound saw this, and implored him to let them take his older breeding dogs. He sold Jack-Jack and two other males (including store favorite, Izzy) to the shelter. They, in turn, contacted Smaller Paws & Pomeranian Rescue (http://www.smallerpawsandpoms.com/) who took them in. That's Jack-Jack's Petfinder photo above. When I got Jack-Jack- then named Pedro by Smaller Paws as he had never had a name before- he had never lived inside, never walked on grass or up stairs, had never been in a family. He spent weeks sitting on the couch just looking at us. He wasn't sure what life was like outside of a cage. That was two and a half years ago. Since then he's had some health issues- he is going blind from Progressive Retinal Atrophy from having distemper as a puppy and he had his kneecaps fixed- but is an amazing dog. He's the "Boss Man" of the store and loves to be picked up by customers or to howl for them. Just say HELLO! To Jack-Jack and he'll say HOWLO! back!
Looking for a purebred dog and think that rescues don't have purebreds? That's not true! According to the Humane Society of the United States, 25% of all dogs in shelters and rescues are purebred, just like Jack-Jack and Bebe. Want a puppy? Shelters and rescues have puppies, too. Four to five million dogs are euthanized in shelters every year, while it's estimated that 4 million puppies are being bred in puppy mills. See the problem with that?
Think you're "rescuing" that puppy from the pet store? You're not. You're just making room for another puppy, and making another miserable mother have to have another litter to produce a puppy for that now empty cage. Every time a puppy is purchased at a pet store, another dog has to be bred to make a puppy to fill that store.
What can you do? Website like Petfinder.com and 1-800-saveapet.com are great resources to search for your perfect dog. Already have a dog and want to help the cause? Give a donation of food, money or your time to your favorite shelter or rescue. Have room in your home for another pup temporarily? Rescues and shelters are always in desperate need of foster homes for their dogs.
Remember to OPT TO ADOPT! Don't buy while others die!

Ouch! My paws hurt!
Ever wonder why your dog lifts his paws outside or refuses to go on walks when it's snowy? Regular salt has harsh chemicals that burns and cracks their paws when they walk on it. What can you do to combat ouchie paw-itis? At Parker's Pets we have lots of cures!
Putting boots on your dog this time of year is essential. Boots are your dog's first line of defense against road salt. We have both Ruffwear Skyliner boots and Pawz disposable boots- both great for dogs that don't like to wear boots. What should you do if your dog already has cracked, sore paws? Happytails Bow Wow Butter Balm or Cain & Able Paw Balm are soothing and moisturizing.
To help your dog at home, we have Safe Paw Ice Melter. Made without the same harsh chemicals at salt, it won't burn your dogs paws or hurt plants or grass!

Deli Fresh!
We're happy to announce we've just begun carrying Deli Fresh dog food & treats! Gently cooked without the use of preservatives, Deli Fresh is great as a stand alone food or topper. Because it's high in meat content, it's great for picky eaters or dogs with sensitive stomachs. Always fresh and never frozen, Deli Fresh comes in a roll and is simple to feed- just slice and serve!
Deli Fresh makes two different types of treats- Fresh Bites and The Loved Dog by Tamar Geller. Both come in beef or chicken. Fresh Bites, similar in shape and texture to a meatball, are Parker's favorites. They're certified by AAFO as a complete diet, so you don't have to worry about feeding too many to your dog! The Loved Dog treats by celebrity trainer Tamar Geller (as seen on Oprah) are super tasty and great for training.
